The focus in 2020 and every year after this is to create new innovative roofs that can meet energy needs, while protect the home from harsh weather conditions like a hail storm.  There are 4 conventional yet innovative Roofing Trends To Lookout For in the year 2020.

Metal roofs

Metal roofs have risen in popularity over the years and 2020 is no different.  Homeowners with all types of homes are choosing metal roofs for its aesthetic appeal and functionality.   One reason why metal roofs are growing in popularity is the wide variety of styles, types and colors to choose from.  Another reason, people are choosing these roofs are due to the long life span that metal roofs have compared to traditional asphalt roofs. There is also no need for regular maintenance.

The cost of a metal roof is about 2 to 3 times more expensive than asphalt.  However, homeowners can save money in the long run, by reducing heating and cooling cost due to the highly reflective and insulation aspect of the metal roof.  In warm weather climates metal roofs may be a better option than traditional roofs, because they are so much cooler.  Some say they can be up to 100 degrees cooler than and asphalt roof.

As a homeowner you have several different options when it comes to choosing roofing materials, depending on your needs and budget you should defintely consider a metal roof installation.

Green Roofs

Green roofs are another trend in roofing that will continue in 2020.  green roofs, which are popular in Europe are gaining traction in the US.  green roofs add vegetation to the rooftops of homes.  They are environmentally friendly and last longer than traditional roofs.  Just like metal roofs, green roofs will save on energy bills and absorb rainwater to reduce runoff.  Other benefits include reducing surface temperature and reducing indoor sound.

Cool Roofs

Cool roofing, where a reflective coating is applied to the roof so it does not absorb heat, is an option that is helping consumers reduce energy spending. A cool roof absorbs less heat from the sun and reflects harsh sunlight more than a traditional roof. The materials and design of the roof reduce the amount of heat that enters the home and keeps the overall temperature of the house cooler.

Among the benefits of cool roofs include:

  • Less need for air conditioning
  • Decrease energy bill costs
  • Non-air conditioned spaces like the garage are also cooler
  • Less roof maintenance costs

Solar roofs

The market for solar roofing materials continues to expand. California reached 1 million solar roofs installed in 2019 and have a mandate stating that new residential construction must include solar energy systems. This should increase the number of requests for solar roofing. Its likely that this trend may expand in other regions of the U.S.

Bold Colors

Some other things that are trending in 2020 for roofs outside of the material are the trending colors? Roofing materials no longer have to all be the same color on the block.  Many homeowners are embracing more bold colors.  “The tendency has been towards earth tones and subtle colors that blend in. Now homeowners are seeking out bolder shades that draw attention and make their home distinctive,” says Renee Ramey, executive director of Metal Roofing Alliance. We’ll see how long this trend last. If I had to take a guess I would say it’s not going anywhere no time soon.
