Keep Energy Costs Down This Winter

by | Dec 7, 2022 | Uncategorized

Throughout the past year, the price for goods and services have increased significantly. As winter approaches, more energy and natural gas will be used as you heat your home. Don’t let this be another area you see an increase in! Here’s a few ways to keep energy cost down this Winter.

Start off by looking at your utility bill. There are a variety of sources that contribute to a high bill. One of the most common is poor insulation. Updating insulation and sealant in the outer walls, attic, ceiling, doors and floors, and windows can be the first and greatest step in improving your bill. From there, check other common areas of your home. Areas include:

-Lighting: Incorporate natural lighting as much as possible. If you have old bulbs, replace them with an energy efficient option such as LEDs. LEDs use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs. While this option may come with a larger upfront investment, choosing LEDs will save money in the long run due to their longevity.

-Update Old Appliances: Similar to the previous point, make sure you’re using energy efficient appliances. Appliances can account for up to 20% of your home’s energy costs. If yours are more than 10 to 15 years old, they are more than likely consuming your bill. More power is allocated to these older appliances, ranging from 70-90%. Purchasing newer machines can easily resolve this, but make sure it’s done as you can afford.

Reduce Your “On” Appliances: Walk around your house and look for electronics that you don’t frequently use. If able, unplug these items to reduce your energy costs. If you want to dive further, you can check your home’s smart meter to see hourly consumption.

Replace Your Showerhead: If you’re looking for another way to reduce your energy bill, replacing your showerhead can be an easy solution. Choosing a low-pressure option can have several advantages including a lower bill and reducing water waste and emissions. There are many options to choose from, so be diligent with your research!

Pay Attention to Your Thermostat: During the winter months, turning your thermostat down (up to 10 degrees) during the day can help you save big. Using a programmable thermostat can help you gain control of your home’s temperature when you’re away and allow you to adjust the temperature as you’re about to return.
