Shingles typically curl in two ways. Cupping occurs when the edges of a shingle turn upwards. Clawing happens when the edges remain flat and the middle starts to rise. These curls indicate signs of weather damage and they can even indicate potential leaks. Shingles are missing

Textured or laminated shingles may still leave a waterproof surface if the base sheet remains. If the base sheet is missing or damaged, it could result in a leak.
