It was a dream come true for an Independence MO mother, after she won a brand new roof, free of charge in 2017.
Dawn B. was a newly single mom, transitioning back into the workforce after being a stay at home mom for over 9 years. Her home of 11 years was in need of desperate repair. She had been struggling to find work for a few years. About 6 years ago the ceiling in her daughter’s room began leaking and deteriorating. A family friend incorrectly replaced the roof and the ceiling and walls within the room. Several months later it started leaking again. The new roof for her family would allow Dawn to focus on other parts of her home that need repair.
Dawn learned about the program from her daughter’s friend’s dad Tyler, after Tyler saw the issues she was having. Tyler told Dawn about the program and how it worked. Dawn had nominated herself only to find out that Tyler had also nominated her. Dawn was one of 8 winners of the Covers for Others program last year, chosen by public vote.
“I was excited that there are programs out there to help people like me. I’m trying to make things better for my family but it’s hard when you don’t have that kind of money” – Dawn B.. Over 1,750,00 homes in America have unrepaired roofing problems. Aspen Contracting established this program in 2015 to help give back nationally to those in need. So far Aspen Contracting has installed 33 roofs with the Covers for Others program.
“It was an awesome opportunity that I got to win, I have great family and friends. They were all very supportive of the program and they voted their butts off for me” – Dawn B. Dawn was very excited to win, stating that she felt extremely blessed and was able to finally give her kids a decent Christmas. “It’s one less thing that I have to worry about, I won’t have to worry about any more leaks in my daughter’s room” -Dawn B.
